Telephone Interpreting Resources — Low-English Alphabet for Chinese Speakers

I have been taking a lot of telephone interpreting jobs lately.

One thing I have had difficulty with is spelling English names, addresses, etc. for Chinese speakers with low English proficiency.

For people with good English, we would simply use the International Phonetic Alphabet — or our own system — to spell over the phone (“Alpha, Bravo, Charlie”, etc.).

However, this doesn’t work well for Chinese speakers with low English proficiency.

So I made a guide which includes both the International Phonetic Alphabet and a simple spelling system for Chinese speakers with low English.

I’ve already printed it out and Blu-Tacked it to my computer screen.

I’m looking forward to using it in my work.

I hope you find it helpful too.
