Now, firstly I need you to know that people with kidney disease are at a higher risk of severe symptoms and complications from coronavirus, but there is no need for alarm. If you have any concerns please contact your local renal unit. We can arrange telehealth consultations so that you don’t have to come to the hospital physically. Please make sure that the unit has your most up-to-date contact information.
For those of you that are receiving dialysis, please make sure that you turn up for your usual treatment. It’s very important that you remain well and receive full treatment. If you do you feel unwell, especially if you have a fever, please do not attend your dialysis appointment, but ring us first and we will then direct you as to the appropriate action.
We advise you to call ahead and check if you really need to be here in person for your treatment. If you do come to the unit please remember that your specific doctor may not be available, but we will provide advice for consultation as needed.
In some cases, we can post or fax your prescriptions to the pharmacy. We do this to better ensure your supply of medications. You can speak to your doctor about organising this. Please remember to keep up with your regular blood tests, otherwise we have no idea how your kidneys are going. The blood collection centres are still open, but if you are concerned you can call ahead and they may be able to arrange someone to come to your house.
If you have to go to a pathology centre, hospital or GP, please remember to maintain social distancing and good hygiene.
I have spoken to the Department of Health, and they have advised me that there are no shortages or supply issues with medicines. So if you have prescriptions you can just keep ordering your medicines as usual. There is no need to stockpile.
Regarding anti-inflammatory medications, people living with kidney disease should use them carefully because there is a risk of kidney injury and they can also affect the function of the kidney. You should only be using them under the direction of your doctor.
There are also some other precautions that you can take to avoid COVID-19. Always opt for contactless delivery of groceries and takeaway food. When possible you can pay via card instead of cash. You can also ask your friend or family member to pick up the food and drink on your behalf. It’s also a good time to think about cooking healthy food at home more often as takeaway food usually has a lot of salt, sugar and fat.
If you’re living with someone who has COVID-19 symptoms, you should advise them to see their GP and possibly get a COVID test. It is important that you practice social distancing with that person until you know whether they are infected or not. If you find out that someone you live with or someone you have come in contact with is infected with COVID-19 you must immediately notify your GP, your kidney doctor and the renal unit. We will then tell you what to do next.
